Review: Comedians look to find their lucky star in Vegas
In recent years, Vegas has shed the stigma of being the town where performers end their careers and become a vital tour stop for the top names in entertainment.
Now, lesser-known performers are looking to Vegas to catapult them to stardom, as the renowned comedy showcase, "Catch A Rising Star," has set up shop in the Excalibur hotel-casino.
"Catch A Rising Star" has helped to launch the careers of Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, David Brenner and Rita Rudner, among other actors, comedians, directors and writers. Pictures of the
"Catch A Rising Star" alum are showcased on the club's wall of fame.
Comedians rotate every week and two perform each night. Mike Saccone and Eddie Brill were brilliant the night I attended; the laughter never stopped. There's no reason to suspect anything less of future
performers.
The entrance to the club is sandwiched into the Excalibur's second-floor Medieval Village, next to the Court Jester's stage and is easy to miss. Inside, the roomy 300-seat club is comprised of tables near
the front with booths along the edges.
Tickets should be purchased at the first-floor ticket booth, near the bell desk. They can also be purchased at the Luxor, Mandalay Bay and Monte Carlo ticket booths up to 30 days in advance.
The format of "Catch A Rising Star's" comedy clubs has been successful for 29 years; hopefully their Vegas run is at least that long.
