Review: "Folies" steeped in French mystique
It was in France that the showgirl first came to prominence. Taking a page from the Parisian revue of the same name, "Folies Bergere" refines the quintessential showgirl performance into a
stunning celebration of fashion, dance and the female form.
The Folies Bergere became the toast of Paris in 1869, when large-scale production shows featuring beautiful showgirls, dancing, acrobats, costumes and scenery became chic. The Tropicana"s
"Folies Bergere" is a grand replica of this tradition.
With stunning acrobatics, vibrant music and rich, colorful costumes, "Folies Bergere" is a feast for the senses. The show starts out as a tease in a dressing room scene, as showgirls and dancers
step out from behind their vanities in barely-there negligees (with flesh-colored bras beneath in the covered show), giving the audience a peek at what's to come.
The show takes the audience through the ages, from the flappers and vamps of the '20s, to the pinups of the '50s to present day seductresses. Vocalists Traci Ault and Paul May complement these scenes with
music that really livens up the crowd.
What makes "Folies Bergere" most impressive, however, is the artistry of the dance numbers, in particular, the can-can segment. With its distinct French flavor, high society meets street
performer as acrobats flip all across the stage while dancers kick up their heels, all dressed in bold, lavish costumes.
Adagio artists Chris Nicholson and Stephanie Shaw add to the thrills. Their limber grace adds elegance to the show as they twist about in a balletic duet, stealing the spotlight. And juggler Wally
Eastwood is an unbridled burst of energy as he juggles golf balls in his mouth and plays a piano with softballs.
"Folies Bergere" came to the Tropicana on December 24, 1959, and has gone through several adaptations. Jerry Jackson, creator and director of "Folies," (once an assistant to Fred
Astaire's choreographer, Hermes Pan) has been a one-man force in revamping the production, designing costumes, composing music and lyrics and choreographing the show since 1966.
The latest installment of Jackson's show has been billed as "sexier than ever." True, "Folies Bergere" is better than ever.
